How to Store Groundnut Oil to Keep It Fresh & Healthy

By Punit Kanzariya 09 Oct, 2025 5 min read

If groundnut oil is not stored properly after purchase, its flavour, colour and nutritional value gradually reduce. In some cases, the oil can even turn rancid, which is not good for health.

In this blog, we will explore simple and practical tips to keep your groundnut oil fresh, safe and long-lasting.

1. Always Use an Airtight Container

Always store groundnut oil in an airtight container. When oil comes in contact with air, oxidation begins, which results in:

  • Change in smell
  • Loss of flavour
  • Oil turning rancid

Best options — airtight stainless steel or glass containers. Avoid loose lids or open cans.

2. Glass or Steel – Best Materials for Storage

These materials are the safest for storing oil:

  • Dark glass bottles: Protects from sunlight
  • Food-grade stainless steel: Strong, safe & long-lasting

Avoid thin plastic bottles for long-term storage, as some plastics may react with heat or sunlight.

3. Keep Away from Direct Sunlight & Heat

Always keep groundnut oil:

  • Away from the gas stove
  • Protected from direct sunlight
  • Not on top of the fridge or microwave

Heat + light = faster oxidation, which reduces taste and quality. The best place is a cool, dark cabinet.

4. Always Use a Clean, Dry Spoon

Never use a wet spoon or oily hands while taking out oil. Even a little moisture inside the container can:

  • Cause spoilage
  • Change the smell
  • Create deposits or fungus

Always use a clean & dry steel spoon or pouring nozzle.

5. Buy in Quantity According to Your Usage

If you have a small family or low oil usage, instead of buying a large 15L tin:

  • Buy 1 litre or 5 litre packs
  • Fresh stock gets used faster, reducing spoilage risk

If buying a large tin, transfer the oil into small glass/steel bottles for daily use.

6. Reused Frying Oil – Use Carefully

Groundnut oil’s high smoke point allows it to be reused 2–3 times, but follow these precautions:

  • Let the oil cool down
  • Strain using fine cloth or strainer
  • Store separately (do not mix with fresh oil)
  • Do not overheat repeatedly — discard if it turns too dark

7. Signs That Your Oil Has Gone Bad

Check smell and colour periodically. Do not use the oil if you notice:

  • Strong sour or rancid smell
  • Darkened colour
  • Bad taste in cooked food

Quick Tips – Best Way to Store Groundnut Oil

  • Use airtight glass or steel containers
  • Keep in a cool, dark place
  • Use clean & dry utensils
  • Buy quantity based on usage
  • Store reused oil separately
  • Check smell & colour regularly

When you choose pure groundnut oil, storing it correctly is equally important. Proper storage ensures the oil stays fresh, flavourful and health-friendly for a long time.
