How to Choose the Best Groundnut Oil in India (Step-by-Step Guide)

By Punit Kanzariya 15 Oct, 2025 7 min read

With so many groundnut oil brands available in the Indian market, consumers often get confused — “Which oil is pure? Which one is healthiest? Which is chemical-free?” This blog is a simple and practical guide to help you choose the best, pure and safe groundnut oil for your family.

1. Check the Label Carefully

Always read the label before buying. Ensure it includes:

  • “100% Pure Groundnut Oil” clearly written
  • No mention of “blended oil” or “edible oil mix”
  • Prefer Cold-Pressed / Wooden Ghani / Kachi Ghani for traditional oil
  • Prefer Double Filtered for strong taste and daily use
  • Manufacturer details, FSSAI number, batch number & packing date should be visible

If the label is unclear, ingredients are vague, or the bottle feels too commercial/flashy, avoid it.

2. Colour – Not Too Dark, Not Too Pale

Pure groundnut oil usually has a light golden to medium golden colour.

  • Too dark = may be over-roasted or old stock
  • Too pale / almost transparent = likely refined or over-processed
  • Fresh cold-pressed oil has a natural, balanced golden tone

3. Aroma – Natural Nutty Fragrance

Smell tells the truth almost instantly:

  • Pure oil has a mild natural nutty aroma
  • No smell at all = refined oil
  • Chemical-like or plastic smell = poor quality or adulterated
  • Burnt or bitter smell = over-heated or old seeds used

4. Touch & Texture – Smooth and Rich

Take a drop between your fingers and rub lightly:

  • Pure oil feels smooth and rich
  • If it feels watery → refined or mixed
  • If sticky or heavy → adulterated with cheap oils

5. Cold-Pressed vs Filtered vs Refined – Which Is Best?

There are three main types in the market:

  • Cold-Pressed / Kachi Ghani Groundnut Oil – Extracted at low temperature using wooden ghani. Retains nutrients, antioxidants, Vitamin E. Best for health-focused families.
  • Double Filtered Groundnut Oil – Traditionally filtered, stronger taste, ideal for everyday cooking & frying. Perfect balance of price + flavour.
  • Refined Groundnut Oil – Highly processed, chemically refined. Looks clean but nutrients are reduced. Best to avoid for health reasons.

6. Price – Too Cheap = Red Flag

Pure groundnut oil cannot be extremely cheap because:

  • High-quality peanuts are required to produce 1L oil
  • Cold-pressed and wooden-ghanis involve slow and costly processing

If a brand sells oil at an unusually low price, it may be:

  • Blended with cheaper oils
  • Made from low-quality or old peanuts
  • Chemically refined at high temperatures

7. Packaging – Tin, Glass or Plastic?

Packaging also impacts oil quality:

  • Metal Tin (15kg / 5L / 10L) – Best for bulk buying & shops
  • Dark Glass Bottle – Best for home use, protects from sunlight
  • Thick Food-Grade Plastic – Common and practical but keep away from heat

8. Simple Home Purity Tests

A few basic checks you can do at home:

  • Fridge Test: Pure oil thickens slightly when kept in the fridge.
  • Foam Test While Frying: Excessive foam = poor or mixed quality.
  • Feel Test After Cooking: If food feels very greasy, oil quality may be low.
